People think that America is the perfect place and we where going to have many opportunities and everyone would be wealthy and happy. We had the American dream where everyone was happy and rich and there where no problems when that wasn't true in the great Gatsby Fitzgerald gives his opinion on the American dream "About half way between West Egg and New York the motor road hastily joins the railroad and runs beside it for a quarter of a mile, so as to shrink away from a certain desolate area of land. This is a valley of ashes" (Fitzgerald 21).The valley of ashes is all of the hopes and dreams dying. This makes it seem like Fitzgerald believes that the dream is dying off.He shows that people cared to much about wealth instead of who they were “She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart she never loved any one except me!” (Fitzgerald 95).Fitzgerald was a poor boy who wanted a rich girl but couldn't have a rich girl until he made himself a successful rich man.
