Providing the soldiers with more protection from enemy attacks, trenches were utilized effectively throughout WWI. For example, in the western front, trenches ran all the way from the English Channel to Switzerland. Despite the protection, trenches had terrible conditions for soldiers and caused thousands of deaths as they were wet and cold, and were filled with mud, lice, and rats. New innovations such as barbed wire, machine guns, and mustard gas also increased intensity of the war.
