By 1830 the majority of slaves had been born in America. Rural slavery consisted of large plantations and men, women, and children would work all day and night in the fields, being whipped to encourage more work. Urban slavery consisted of slaves mostly working in mills and on ships. Some slaves became skilled at certain things enslaved backs could hire themselves out easier than a free blacks in the norht because of racial discrimination.
