Rural life in Texas
Between 1848-1860 nearly all Texans lived on farms. During this time the number of farms skyrocketed. This was because land was inexpensive and available. Many farmers grew wheat, corn, oats, and sweet potatoes as well as raised cattle. But mostly all farmers grew cotton. Because cotton was a cash crop it was valuable and was shipped all over.
