Growth of towns
Although many Texans lived on farms and ranches, many began to move into towns. In 1850 fewer than 13,000 people lived in towns in Texas. By 1860 the number had nearly jumped to 26,000. Galveston was the biggest with only 5,000 residents. Soon towns all over began to grow. Many towns had a large number of immigrants. Although many towns had upwards close to 10,000 residents, they could not be considered a city.
