The hardships of war
The union learned quickly that the war would be long and hard. At Virginia July 21, 1861 bull run was a tough defeat for the union. Hermon Clarke wrote "I sleep on the open air and on mud and eat hard biscuits and dry meat but my health is good and I've never been so great in my life!"
