Transportation
Most Texans rode horseback, or in wagons pulled by horses. Sandbars, rafts, and debris made steam-boat travel impossible on most Texas rivers. An exception was the Rio. Grande. Many towns were served by stage coaches which carried a few passengers. Railroad construction began in the 1850s, and by the 1860s, 400 miles of track were in use.
