Stars are born from within clouds of dust and gas. At one point, the clouds collapse under their own gravitational pull. The materials in the center begin to heat up. This is known as a protostar.

How are Stars formed?

When the cloud collapses, the dense, hot core forms and it begins to gather up dust and gas. Not all of this material will end up as part of the star, some of the remains will become other objects such as: planets, asteroids, comets, or simply remain dust.
