Binary fission

Prokaryotic cells undergo binary fission

There are three steps of binary fission.
1. DNA Replication - just before the cell divides, its DNA is copied. This results in two identical chromosomes
2. Chromosome segregation- two chromosomes move to opposite sides of the cell
3. Separation- a new plasma membrane starts growing into the center of the cell, and the cytoplasm splits apart forming two daughter cells.

The daughter cells are identical to each other and the parent

Bacteria is an example of what undergoes this process

It takes about 20 minutes
