This passage is from Abraham Lincoln's speech from the 1885 campaign. Slavery was a big problem back then, the country was divided because of this. Lincoln is basically saying that a country cannot stand divided. He wasn't excepting for the union or confederacy disappear but they can't fight forever but, one of them will become the other.
