James Prendergast's first mill burned down in 1812--and the dam with it failed, as well.

The dam failure caused the levels of Chautauqua Lake to rise and flood. Prendergast was ordered to pay damages.

He rebuilt in 1814 near the site of present-day Main Street & 2nd Street.
