"Jamestown" was selected as the village's name in 1816 when the US Postal Service was preparing to open a Post Office there.

Prendergast lived in Jamestown until 1836, when he moved to Ripley, NY.

He moved again in 1841 to Kiantone, NY, where he died in 1846.
