While studying the fermentation of vinegar and wine in France, Louis found that certain bacteria and microbes would cause drinks and foods to spoil.

With further investigation, Louis Pasteur found that heat could kill many of the microbes that were causing the spoiling. Today, the process of heating milk, which contains many of the microbes, to kill the bacteria, is in his honor, called “pasteur”ization.
