She registered black voters for the 1960 presidential campaign, and twice ran unsuccessfully for senate

in 1967 she became the first black woman introduced to the state senate since 1883, she chaired the labor and Management Relatons committee. In 1972 she was elected president pro tempore of the senate

Smart, she graduated Texas Southern University, received a law degree from Boston university and passed Bar ExaMassachusettstss and Texas within the same year. Hardworking, she did many things and with each thing led her to more success

Her speech helped rally support for James E. Carter's presidential campaign. Became the first black woman to be inducted into the state senate
