John Calhoun was a political ally of Stephan Douglas. President Pierce made him Surveyor General of Kansas and Nebraska in 1854. He was a delegate of the Lecompton Constitutional Convention in which he was made president of the organized body.

Samuel D.Lecompte was made Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Kansas Territory. Because of his status as a Democrat many saw him as being a proslavery man. He later became a republican and served as judge then served in the state legislature.

Daniel Woodson was a Democrat appointed secretary of the Kansas Territory by President Pierce. While acting governor he signed the first laws passed by the territorial legislature and these laws were proslavery.
