Very fertile soil covers most of the western land of the region, and the Appalachian mountains southern tip is located here and stretches through the Virginias and Tennessee. The Atlantic Ocean borders the east and the Gulf of Mexico borders the south. Major rivers include the Mississippi, Alabama, and the Tennessee River. The largest lakes are Lake Okeechobee and Lake Cumberland.
