This play is about a man named Jerry that gets a divorce with his wife and then means a struggling dancer named Gittel. They fall instantly in love, but the relationship has complications because of their different backgrounds.
While he's trying to prepare for a bar examination, he finds out that Gittel has been having a fling with her ex-boyfriend. They prepare to move in together nevertheless, but Gittel is upset when she learns that the divorce came through and Jerry did not tell her about it. Jerry explains that even though he is divorced from his former wife on paper, they continue bonded in many ways.
