10.2 Key Questions/ What are the main events of the cell cycle?
In the cell cycle, a cell grows and gets ready for division, when two daughter cells form. The eukaryotic cell cycle involves interphase and cell division.
In the G1 phase, also know as Cell Growth, the cell is mostly growing and increases in size and makes new proteins and organelles.
The eukaryotic cell cycle has 4 phases: G1, S, G2 & M. The growing stage in cell division is also know as interphase, a long period of the cell cycle between one cell division and the next.
In the S phase which also known as DNA Replication, New DNA is made when chromosomes are duplicated.
In the G2 phase which is also know as Preparing for Cell Division, When DNA duplication is complete. Many of the molecules are formed in this phase.
In the M phase, known as Cell Division, the M stands for Mitosis, which is the part of the eukaryotic cell cycle divides the nucleus. The second stage in Mitosis is Cytokinesis, which is when the cytoplasm divides.
