Voting Restrictions
Poll tax: a special fee that a person has to pay before they vote, which many African Americans couldn't afford
Literacy Test: tests taken before being able to vote to prove that you can read, write, and have minimum knowledge. blacks were usually given harder tests.
Grandfather Clauses: laws that exempted men from certain voting restrictions if they, or their ancestors, have voted before. African Americans couldn't use this, so it was mainly used for poor, white men.
