Endoplasmic Reticulum

Large call outs are Helvectica Neue and set at 20pt in a shade of jade

Structure: this type of ER is considered to be "rough" due to the ribosomes on its surface

Function: Rough Endoplasmic reticulum is involved in the synthesis of proteins. It is abundant in cells that produce large amounts of proteins to export

Small body copy is Arial MT at 12pt

Rough ER

Smooth ER

Structure: Smooth ER does not have ribosomes on its surface, has a membrane, and is held together by the cytoskeleton

Function: Smooth ER has collections of enzymes that perform special tasks, launch as the synthesis of membrane lipids and the detoxification of drugs.

The endoplasmic reticulum is where lipid components of the cell membrane are assembled, along with protein and other materials that are exported from the cell
