The Whooping Cough
How is it spread?
-The whooping cough bacteria (Bordetella pertussis) are spread through direct contact with an infected person's respiratory secretions. Whooping cough can be passed either through the air or by touching a contaminated surface.

Nasal congestion
Sneezing
Red, watery eyes
A mild fever
Dry cough
Statistics on Whooping Cough Prior to the Vaccine:
Before the availability of the pertussis vaccine, whooping cough (also known as pertussis) was a common cause of complications and deaths among children. During the 6-year period from 1940 through 1945, more than 1 million cases of whooping cough were reported, an average of 175,000 cases per year (incidence of approximately 150 cases per 100,000 population).

Provoke vomiting
Result in a red or blue face
Cause extreme fatigue
End with a high-pitched "whoop" sound during the next breath of air
