Trench Warfare

They were built in order to protect the soldiers. The battle fields were not very protective and the trench provided cover. This was effective of protecting soldiers of machine gun fire, but often made the prone to diseases as dead bodies would pile up. It essentially created stalemates as they forced long ranged battle.
