In return for a Lord's promise to provide him troops and money, a King would grant a Lord a fief. The Lord was in charge of his fief, which he would further subdivide among his vassal, after an exchange of pledges known as the feudal contract. The vassal also agreed to provide The Lord money, advice, and 40 days of military service each year. The lords made up less than 5% of population.
