The Evolution of Protista

The endosymbiotic theory suggests that a large prokaryote engulfed a smaller prokaryote and the two organisms lived symbiotically. Eventually the two organisms became a single, more highly developed organism. Some scientists believe that the mitochondria and chloroplasts found in eukaryotes were once their own organisms. The endosymbiotic theory is said to have created the first Protists billions of years ago.
