The Discovery of Protista

Anthony Ben Leeuwenhoek first discovered and made detailed descriptions of Protists in 1676, but German zoologist Ernest Haeckel first proposed the Kingdom Protista in 1866. In this kingdom scientist placed micro organisms that were not plant or animal. It was later discovered that Protists were created by the Endosymbiosis Theory. There are more than 200,000 species of Protists that have been discovered.
