Education Reform


-Before the mid-1800s, there was no uniform education policy in the United States.
-Classrooms were not divided by grade, so young and old children were put together.
-Few children continued school after they turned 10.
-In the 1830s, Americans began to demand tax-supported public schools more and more.
-Pennsylvania created a tax-supported public school system but many people opposed the taxes and more school.
-In three years however, 42% of the children in Pennsylvania were going to public schools.
