Vietnam War started in 1959 and ended in 1975. The war was pretty much a prolonged struggle between nationalist forces. They attempted to unify the country of Vietnam under communist government and the United States.
The war was primarily a need for helping to prevent the spread of communism. The Vietnam war was the longest war in U.S. history up until 2002. The Vietnam war had a second name, which is the Second Indochina War.
American involvement was to make communist take over the south of Vietnam
