Greece

Olympia

Olympia was an Ancient Greek city which held the Olympic Games every four years. The Statue of Zeus was in Olympia. During the classical period, in between the 4th and 5th centuries B.C., Olympia thrived and many cultural and religious statues were being built, like The Statue of Zeus. It was hard to excavate the remains of Olympia because there were alluvium deposits 8 meters deep covering the city, thought to be the result of flooding. Alluvium is an area or deposit of clay, silt, gravel, and sand.
