For a period of time in the late nineteenth century, tattoos and piercings began to be negatively viewed. They were considered a symbol of the rebellious people of the world or were used to diminish people. In Greece, tattoos identified slaves. Romans began marking criminals with tattoos. Additionally, in WWII, nazi's tattooed registration numbers on prisoners at auschwitz.
