•before this was made monks had to copy down everything which was very time consuming
•books used to be very expensive because of how rare they tended to be
•the setback with this invention is that each time you needed to print a different page you'd have to rearrange where you want the letters to go
•This also resulted in more people wanting to write books and publish them
