Come Again In The Spring- The Birds are a symbol of life, happiness, mortality, and hope.

I think that the birds represent life. They also represent happiness and mortality. For example, when the cloaked man asked the old man what his father had said the day he was born, the old man could not remember but remembered as soon as he saw the birds. So, they also represent hope, because every day the old man would see hope in them.
