Malintzin was a guide and interpreter for Cortes. He made alliances with tribes that did not like losing battles and paying tribute to the Aztecs.

Spaniards had better weapons. Aztecs could not match their armor, cannons, or swords. Spaniards brought horses. The Aztecs had never seen horses.

The Spanish had unknowingly brought diseases such as smallpox to the Americas. The new diseases swept Aztec communities. Aztecs became weak and didn't have strength to defend themselves.
