Surgery back a while, was the last resort of anything. The doctors back then did not have the anesthesia to put the patients to sleep and perform the surgery. And if you had a surgery back then you most likely didn't survive because of blood loss and pain.

How it has changed over the years

Now in this era of humanity doctors have created a magnificent way for patients to have surgery and not die of the causes. My dad is an anesthesiologist and he has told me so much about anesthesia.
