Structure
•Given this name because ribosomes are found on its surface.

Function
•"Mainly responsible for the synthesis and processing of proteins that are either secreted from the cell or that end up stuck in the plasma membrane"
•New proteins leave the ribosomes and become inserted into the rough ER. The newly made proteins are then chemically modified.
•Proteins that have been released from the cell are synthesized on the rough ER.
•When cells produce large amounts of proteins for export, rough ER is abundant.
