Racism/ Segregation

Both children and wives were beaten and abused in this novel. The 2 main recipients would be Celie and Sofia, they both experienced abuse in their childhood and marriages.

The main character (Celie) finds out who she is and valuing what she can become.

There is still discrimination in this time period. Sofia was basically treated as a slave to the mayor for her punishment.

Religion

Celie's letters are addressed to God. She says as long as she can spell G-O-D she'll have someone with her watching down on her to help her if she needs it.
