A guild, in the Middle Ages, is an association of merchants who cooperated to uphold standards of their trade and to protect their economic interests.

The guilds ruled town life by passing laws and levying taxes.The funds were used to improve town life by making infrastructure improvements, such as paving streets with cobblestones.
