Structure
Microtubules are hollow structures made of proteins known as tubulins.
Function
Microtubules help maintain the cell's shape. During cell division, they form a mitotic spindle that helps separate chromosomes. They also help build projections from the cell surface, such as cilia and flagella, that enable the cell to swim rapidly through liquids.
