The Appalachian Dulcimer
By: Alec Worix
The Appalachian Dulcimer came over when the Scottish Irish immigrants moved into the southern Appalachian Mountains. There has been several fretted zithers that has existed in continental Europe similar to the dulcimer. The development of the dulcimer has been since the 1700's up to the mid 1900's. It is speculated that early settlers were unable to make the more complex violin because of a lack of tools. This lead to the development of the dulcimer with less dramatic curves.
