The dulcimer is regarded as one of the easiest string instruments to play because it has no more than four strings. It is usually played on the lap plucking the strings with the right hand and pressing the frets with the left hand. Another way to play it is on a wooden table which is suppose to boost the volume of the instrument. You usually fret the board with a "noter" or a short length dowel or bamboo. This type of playing is known as "noter-drone".
