For the first half of the 20th century the dulcimer was a rare find because there were few that made the instrument. You only started to hear audio recordings of the dulcimer no earlier than the 1930's. Although in the 1950's it received a revival when urban folk music became popular. During the early 1960's Jean Ritchie began distributing the dulcimer that a Kentucky relative of hers produced. By 1965 the dulcimer was a familiar sight among folk music circles.
