James was born in Kirriemuir, Forfarshire, Scotland on May 9, 1860. He was the ninth child out of ten but not all survived past being an infant. Luckily, he did. He attended his first school in 1867, a little private school run by two sisters. Later, he spent five years at the Dumfries Academy.
