imaginative fiction dependent for effect on strangeness of setting (such as other worlds or times) and of characters (such as supernatural or unnatural beings).

fantasy writers set up their worlds in 3 ways:
-by beginning and ending in a fantasy world
-by starting in the real world and ending in a fantasy world
-being set in the real world while elements of magic intrude upon it

protagonists in fantasy stories usually cross some opening or portal between worlds
