In January 1944, Dwight Eisenhower was appointed commander of Operation Overlord by President Roosevelt. The overall goal of the invasion was to liberate Western Europe from the Nazis. Leading up to D-Day, the Allies carried out an operation that tricked the Germans into thinking the main invasion point was Pas-de-Calais by using decoy troops and equipment. The real target was Normandy, France. Eisenhower chose the date for the invasion of Normandy as June 5, but bad weather caused it to be delayed for twenty-four hours. Eisenhower gave the go-ahead for Operation Overlord to begin on June 6.
