In less than a week, the beaches were fully secured. In the following weeks, the Allies fought their way across the Normandy countryside. They struggled against resistance by German soldiers and a difficult landscape, but by the end of June, they had landed about 850,000 troops in Normandy and captured the vital port of Cherbourg. The Allied troops were ready to march across France.
