Frontier regiment is what history named the regiment of rangers, authorized by the Ninth legislature on December 21, 1861, for the protection of the north of Texas. The companies lacked support and organization from their government. Colonel James M. Nelson had made nine companies to a total of about 1,000 rangers. They were set into 16 just east of the frontier line. The members were put into groups. The ranges patrolled around the camps. Comanche warriors noticed a weakness. They shook through the rangers because they knew the schedules, and soon pushed east about 50- 100 miles. Families left homes for safety in family forts, a move that is known as "forging up".
