The Digestive System

Digestion is when the food you eat gets broken up into bits and pieces of food for your body to use as energy. Digestion begins in your mouth. Your teeth makes the food smaller and your saliva helps soften the food into a bolus. The tongue moves the food to the pharynx and down the esophagus. Next the esophagus leads to the stomach. It turns the food into liquid and after 4-6 hours of squeezing and mixing, it goes into the small intestine. The small intestine takes the nutrients from the food and break down the food even more. Then, the food goes into the large intestine. The water and minerals get taken out of the food. Finally, the food goes out of the body.
