Vulnerability
Athena, the goddess of wisdom, comes down to earth to talk to one mortal in particular. Telemachus son of Odysseus. Telemachus is almost nothing like his father. Odysseus is courageous, charming, and heroic, while his son is shy, weak, and vulnerable. He lacks a father figure to guide him through his troubles. Instead he must face them alone. But Athena sees something in Telemachus that others do not. Deep down inside she sees there is courage and determination in his heart. He just doesn't know how to bring it out. Athena doesn't go to Telemachus as herself. She disguises herself as an old wise man, and does something that no one has ever done to Telemachus. She inspires him. She tells him of his father, that he will one day return to his homeland and family. But he can't do it without Telemachus' help. This changes Telemachus' character quite drastically. At the time Athena comes to him, he is very vulnerable. Suitors stalk his mother everyday in order to take to throne. Telemachus is shown no respect by them and is taken advantage of. After Athena's visit Telemachus is all hyped up. He tells the suitors what's on his mind. He stands up for himself. For he is inspired.
