Battle of Chaldiran

At the critical battle on the plain of Chaldiran (1514), the Ottomans deployed heavy artillery and thousands of equipped Janissaries. The Ottomans badly damaged the Safavid state but lacked the resources to destroy it completely, and the two empires remained locked in intermittent conflict for the next two centuries.
