Janissary Corps
As the Ottoman state became more firmly established, it added a professional cavalry force equipped with heavy armor and financed by land grants. The boys recieved special training, learned Turkish, and converted to Islam. Those who became soldiers were known as Janissaries. The Janissaries quickly gained reputation for esprit de corps, loyalty to the sultan, and readiness to employ new military technology.
