They built the temple in the the year 1478/72-B.C.E. because they wanted to put Queen Hatshepsut there when she died. King Thutmose the Third never really liked Hatshepsut because Thutmose wanted to be pharaoh but Hatshepsut didn't want that because he would take her spot as pharaoh. Thutmose built the temple so he could berry Hatshepsut's body so no-one could find it.
Queen Hatshepsut choose to build her temple in a valley sacred to the Theban goddess of the west, it was on a direct axis with the Karnak Temple of Amun on the east bank. It was also only a short distance from the tomb she had built for herself in the Valley of the Kings.
